Removing all of the old shingles before installing new ones is very important. Multiple layers of shingles create unnecessary weight on the roof, and you also should inspect the roof deck for decay or damage. There are tools made specifically for removing shingles. You can also use a flat shovel to pry the shingles from the roof. BE SURE TO GET ALL THE NAILS OUT!! Replacing a roof is a big job – you will probably need several helpers.

Look in your yellow pages for “roofing contractor”. This is not the type of job you want to take on if you don’t know what you are doing. Expect to pay between $100-150/square (100 square feet) as a base price. Add for any sheets of plywood that need to be replaced, which they won’t know until the old shingles are off.
