What is the cost for a new roof?
What would it cost for a new asphalt shingle roof for a one story house with 48 squares of roofing? The roofer will have to tear off one layer of alsphalt and one layer of wood shingles and put decking over the whole house. This is in Houston Texas after Hurricane Ike.
I am trying to get estimates. The roofers are so busy that even getting an estimate is difficult. I have calls into 15 different roof companies. The insurance adjuster has already been out and I am still waiting to get their estimate. I just thought someone might know what the cost was so I can at least have some idea when I do get a roofer to come out. My question is what is the cost?

Your best bet is to get several estimates and compare them because cost varies by region. If the decking has to be replaced it’s going to be more expensive than just replacing the waterproof part of the roof. The estimates should include removal and hauling off of the old roof, installation of the roof decking and clips, drip edging, new roofing felt, shingles, boots around any vents and chimneys, flashing, etc. It should also state he will thoroughly clean up after the job. The estimate and contract should state what materials are going to be used (type of material and guarantee) and when the job will be started and finished. Expect to pay extra if there are power vents or passive ventilators that need replacing. Be certain the roofer has proof of insurance and that he is bonded. A good practice is to get references and check with your neighbors, relatives, etc., for referrals. If you get several estimates and there’s a significant difference on one of them I’d get an explanation of why he’s so much cheaper or more expensive, or just eliminate that one and re-interview the others. If the damage was caused by the hurricane, you should call your insurance agent. I had my roof replaced by insurance when the high winds of one of the hurricanes came through and took off the shingles, and I live in Ohio.

Try breaking down the parts of the job. Call a building supply place and see what they’d want for the shingles, delivered to the roof. Find out what roofers charge per hour for labour, figure a day or two for 2 guys to do the tearing off, the cost of a dumpster, figure out how much plywood for the decking and get a price on that, delivered. Then figure 2 or 3 guys for 2 or 3 days to install decking and roofing. Find out how much else is needed in supplies like felt, flashing, nails and such. Building supply places can advise you on that. Will you need gutters? Hey, I’m not a roofer, but with this method you can at least get a rough idea. You’ll know whether you’re looking at $10,000 or 20,000.
