New roof: Should nails show through underside of decking in attic?
I had a licensed roofer put a new roof on my 15-year old, 2,000-square foot house in Florida (3-tab, 30-year architectural shingles). From the outside, looks like he did a nice job, but if you go into the attic, the tips of many of the nails drove all the way through the plywood decking… you can see maybe 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch of most the nail ends sticking through underside of the plywood. If you stand up in certain places in attic, you could get impailed by these exposed nail tips. Is this a normal or acceptable way to put on a roof, and/or what is the norm?

herts leaking roof
Yes. The shingle nails should penetrate the roof decking. I wear a bump cap in attics while wiring just for that reason. Those nails hurt.
herts roofing repair
absolutely normal, only way to do it really. If the nails didnt go through the plywood the shingles would fly off. Normally in you wouldnt notice if you had somesort of wall cover up in your attic (sheetrock ect) and they would be a non issue.
herts roof leaks
Yep, it’s normal. If were to NOT see the nail points, THEN you’d have a problem!
herts roof repair
yes quite normal for roofing nails to penetrate
watch your head when your up there
herts asphalt roofing
You want the nails to poke thru. If he had used shorter nails they wouldn’t have held up to high winds. It’s the norm and not something to worry about. The attic isn’t considered a living space unless finished so there are probably many things poking thru.
herts flat roof construction
yes that is normal if they dont stick out then that means they were not long enough and your shingles would blow off
