Trish asked:
Do you need the heat to stick the glue? Do you need the heat so the shingles fold to conform to the topline of the roof?

Depends on the best time for who?
For roofing companies, it really doesn’t matter as long as it’s not in the winter. Seasoned roofing companies start early in the morning during the summer months and often are done for the day by 2pm. In the spring they still start at 7-7:30 am, and the same for the fall. These guys adapt to the weather easily. The spring is a difficult time as most rain comes in the spring and if a roof tear-off is involved a soggy yard gives way to ruts when the need to drive their trucks around and up close to the house to slide old shingles off the roof and into the trucks.
As far as the sun sealing the shingles, you would be surprised that even in the spring and fall, the radiant heat from the sun can make the shingles quite hot even if the temps are in the 50’s.
So, other than winter – and some people have damage and can’t wait for spring, it’s not a big deal for the roofers.

A good time for the homeowner is in the fall when many roofing companies business slows. They often run discounts to keep the work coming in.
As far as the company? anytime is a good time because it’s $$ in their pockets.
The adhesive strip on the shingles will adhere in just about any season so long as the sun beams down on it.
