I have a flat roof that has been previously patched with black tar and white (not sure what this is) material. One roofer told me black tar will deteriorate over time with ultraviolet exposure. Is this true? Ist the white (elastomeric?) patch better? The patching will be done in a small area condusive to ponding. Any recommendations on products and methods is appreciated. Thanks!

I have a “Farm House” that is leaking over the staircase going to the upstairs. The house has a few layers of shingles already and a flat tar roof over the staircase …. the flat roof has a valley from the peak of the main house … (sorry for a bad description) ..

I’ve tared the flat roof and valley once already, but it is still leaking – I cannot afford to put another roof on till next year – so how can I fix this? Can I take off the flat roof and replace it – and build a valley back to the shingled roof — without taking that off?

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!! I cannot afford much right now – since I’m saving for the entire replacement. Its a 110 yr old house, with good plaster and woodwork, so I don’t want it to get ruined.

I’m seeing more and more of this. The roof shingles wrap around the gutters as if they were gards. But I don’t see how the gutters can still control the flow of water. Why do people get shingles like this? Is it good?

I want to know if there is some kind of power tool available to remove roof shingles so I can do it myself…..I can’t afford to hire a contractor

We are designing a house and I am curious to know whether flat roofs are harder to build then gable roofs etc? Also are they cheaper or more expensive to build than gables etc?
